How it Works

The Academic Listening test has 4 parts and lasts 30 minutes. It tests your ability to understand main points, details, opinions, purpose and attitudes of the speakers, as well as your ability to follow the flow of ideas.

In your Academic Listening test, you will answer 40 questions based on 4 recordings. The first two recordings are about situations in everyday life. The last two recordings are about situations in education or training.

For the first and third recordings, you will listen to a dialogue between two or more people, but for the second and fourth recordings, you will listen to a single speaker. You will have to answer different types of questions related to the recordings, such as choosing the best option, matching information, headings, features or endings of sentences, and completing sentences, summaries, notes, tables, diagrams or flow-charts.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The IELTS Listening and Reading sections are graded on a scale of 1 to 9, with raw scores initially calculated out of 40. Each correct answer in the 40-question tests contributes one mark, allowing test-takers to achieve a maximum score of 40. The band scores, ranging from 1 to 9, are then determined by the raw scores obtained.
